Question Time!
What a start to the campaign!
In my first event since being selected as Labour’s Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Westmorland and Lonsdale, I was delighted to speak at a ‘Question Time’ event with sixth formers at Queen Katherine’s School in Kendal.
The students asked searching questions to a panel of representatives from five major parties. We were quizzed on topics including clean energy, Brexit, immigration, neighbourhood policing, public transport and what our party can offer to young people.
Continuing the £2 bus fare trial remains a hot topic. A Labour government would allow local councils to take back control of planning bus routes and fares in their local area, to design a transport network that works for local people.
Clean energy was also on the agenda for students. We recognise that fossil fuels must be urgently phased out of our energy system. Labour is committing to doing that by 2030. Nuclear will be part of the energy mix under a Labour government and our plans to power up GB Energy, providing a much-needed boost to a strong Cumbrian industry.
Thank you to everyone who took part and particularly those who engaged with our party policies and asked insightful questions. We have some brilliant young people in this area and the future is bright!
